Texas HVAC licenses are public and take 90 seconds to check. What to verify on a Dallas contractor, the permit and warranty traps, and what to ask first.
Texas licenses HVAC contractors, and the license is public. Anyone can check it in about ninety seconds. Almost nobody does — which is how unlicensed work keeps getting sold in Dallas at a price that looks like a bargain right up until the compressor fails and the manufacturer denies the warranty claim.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation maintains a searchable public list of every licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contractor in the state. Search the company name, or better, the license number they give you.
A license means the contractor met the state’s requirements for experience, testing, and insurance. It is a floor, not a rating. It says nothing about whether they show up on time, size a system correctly, or pull the permit. Treat it as the first filter, not the decision.
Texas requires licensed contractors to carry general liability coverage. Asking “are you insured?” gets a yes from everyone. Asking for a certificate of insurance naming your address gets a yes from a much smaller group, and it takes them one email to produce it. If a contractor is going to be brazing refrigerant lines in your attic, this is a reasonable thing to see.
The City of Dallas requires a mechanical permit for a system replacement. A contractor who suggests skipping it is not saving you a fee — they’re moving the risk onto you. Unpermitted mechanical work surfaces during a home sale inspection, and the buyer’s lender is the one who decides how expensive that becomes.
Permitted work also gets inspected, which is the only independent check anyone will ever perform on the installation.

Manufacturer parts warranties on new equipment generally require installation by a licensed contractor and registration within a set window — often 60 or 90 days from install. An unlicensed install can void a ten-year parts warranty on day one, and the homeowner finds out about it in year six, holding a compressor quote.
Ask who registers the warranty and get the confirmation in writing after the job.
