1. Replace or clean the air filter. A clogged filter is the single most common cause of reduced airflow and unnecessary strain on the system. Do this monthly during peak season.
2. Clear debris around the outdoor unit. Leaves, grass clippings, and mulch buildup restrict airflow to the condenser. Keep at least two feet of clearance on all sides.
3. Check the condensate drain line. A clog here is a common cause of water damage once humidity and usage both increase in summer. If you can, flush it with a mix of water and vinegar before peak season.
4. Test the thermostat. Confirm it’s responding accurately and, if it’s a smart thermostat, that it’s still properly connected after any software updates.
5. Listen for unusual sounds during a test run. Banging, hissing, or grinding noises are easier — and cheaper — to diagnose in April than in the middle of a July heat wave.
6. Schedule a professional tune-up if it’s been over a year. A technician can check refrigerant levels, electrical connections, and coil condition — things that aren’t visible from a homeowner-level check.
