Blank thermostat screen, wrong temperature, or a system that ignores it? Work through the checks that separate a thermostat fault from an equipment fault.
A meaningful share of the no-cooling and no-heat calls we take turn out to be thermostat calls. That’s good news for the homeowner — it’s the cheapest part of the system to be wrong — but only if it gets identified before someone starts pricing a compressor. Here’s how to tell the difference from your hallway.
Work in this order, because the order is roughly cheapest-to-most-annoying:
If the display is lit and the system ignores it, the thermostat is probably fine and something downstream isn’t. Before calling, check the obvious traps: the mode is actually set to Cool or Heat rather than Off, the setpoint is genuinely past room temperature, and any schedule or hold isn’t quietly overriding what you just entered.
Then give it five minutes. Most equipment has a built-in delay of three to five minutes to protect the compressor from short cycling. Standing in front of a thermostat waiting for an instant response is how a working system gets diagnosed as broken.
Check whether the fan setting is on ON rather than AUTO. On ON, the blower runs continuously whether or not the system is actively cooling, so you get a steady stream of room-temperature air out of the vents and a house that never quite gets comfortable. AUTO is what you want almost always.

A thermostat reads the air at one spot on one wall, and where that spot is changes what it reports:

A thermostat reading two or three degrees off its surroundings is usually placement, not a defect. Ten degrees off is a failed sensor.
Most smart thermostats need a common wire for continuous power. Installed in an older home without one, they run off a workaround that borrows power through the control circuit — and that setup produces exactly the symptoms people report as a broken system: random reboots, dropped Wi-Fi, the system short cycling, or heat that turns on by itself.
If your problems started when the smart thermostat went in, the thermostat isn’t defective. The wiring behind it is incomplete, and running a proper C-wire is the fix.
Replacing a thermostat is one of the least expensive jobs in HVAC, and on an older mercury or builder-grade unit it often pays for itself in a season of not overcooling an empty house.
