Upstairs hot and downstairs cold in a DFW two-story? Why attic ducts cause it, why closing downstairs vents backfires, and the fixes ranked cheapest first.
It’s the most common complaint we hear in Dallas–Fort Worth two-story homes, and it’s almost never a broken air conditioner. The downstairs sits at a comfortable 73°F, the upstairs bedrooms hover around 80°F, and turning the thermostat down just freezes whoever is sitting on the couch while the second floor stays exactly as hot as it was.
Three things stack on top of each other, and any one of them alone would be manageable:
That last one is why the upstairs problem is worst in the afternoon and why it barely improves when you run the system harder.

It’s the first thing everyone tries and it makes things worse. A duct system is designed around a specific airflow; closing registers doesn’t redirect that air upstairs, it raises static pressure across the whole system. The blower moves less total air, the evaporator coil gets colder and starts to freeze, and the upstairs — at the end of the longest, leakiest runs — receives even less than before.
Two or three registers barely cracked is fine. Half the first floor shut is a way to fail an evaporator coil.
The reason this problem persists for years in the same house is that people keep buying fixes without measuring anything first. Static pressure across the air handler, airflow at each upstairs register, and the temperature difference between what leaves the coil and what arrives in the bedroom — three measurements that tell you whether you’re buying duct work, insulation, or a zoning system.
Guessing costs more than measuring, in this particular problem more than any other.
