Air conditioners make a consistent noise. When the sound changes, the change itself is the diagnostic — and a few of these sounds mean turn it off before you finish reading.
A healthy system has a signature: a hum from the outdoor unit, air movement indoors, and a soft click at the start and end of each cycle. Anything sharply different — metal on metal, a bang at shutdown, an electrical buzz — is a component telling you it's failing.
Some of these are cheap fixes caught early and expensive ones caught late. A screeching blower bearing costs a fraction of the motor it eventually destroys, and a rattling panel takes minutes to fix but will happily vibrate a line set loose if you leave it.
Match what you're hearing to this list. The first three are the ones that mean shut the system off and call rather than wait for a convenient appointment:
Not every noise is a repair. Outdoor units in DFW collect an impressive amount of yard debris, and a service panel loosened by vibration will rattle convincingly enough that people assume the worst.
With the power off at the disconnect, you can look for twigs and leaves in the fan cage and check that the panel screws are snug. If the noise disappears, you've saved yourself a service call — and we'd rather tell you that than sell you something.
Thousands of start cycles a season wear contactors and bearings, and heat accelerates it. Add hard water, construction dust, and cottonwood in the spring, and a DFW condenser lives a harder life than the same unit would in a milder climate.
This is exactly the failure category that maintenance catches early. Bearings, mounts, and blower balance are things a technician hears and measures long before you do — and replacing a bearing beats replacing a motor by a wide margin.
Turn it off. Screeching usually means a motor bearing or the compressor is failing under load, and running it further can turn a repairable part into a full replacement. It isn't a hazard to you, but it's actively destroying the equipment.
Usually loose or broken compressor mounts letting the compressor lurch as it stops, or a fan blade contacting the housing. Sometimes it's ductwork expanding and contracting, which is harmless. It's worth a look either way.
Almost always electrical — a failing contactor, a capacitor near the end of its life, or a loose connection. Buzzing components generate heat, so this is one to address quickly rather than live with.
Often not. A loose service panel or debris in the condenser is a five-minute fix. But persistent rattling can also be a fan blade out of balance, which wears the motor bearing, so don't just tune it out.
