A breaker that trips is doing its job. It's the one component in your house specifically designed to fail so that wiring, equipment, and people don't.
When your air conditioner trips a breaker, something in the system is pulling more amperage than the circuit is rated for — or current is finding a path to ground it shouldn't have. Both are real electrical faults, and neither fixes itself.
The single most important thing to understand: reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and call. Repeatedly resetting a breaker into a fault overheats wiring inside walls and attics, and it's one of the more common causes of HVAC-related electrical fires.
The cause is usually electrical, sometimes mechanical, and occasionally the breaker itself. Ranked by how often we find them:
The timing is genuinely diagnostic, so notice it before you call. A breaker that trips the instant the system tries to start points at a hard electrical fault — a shorted compressor, a grounded winding, or damaged wiring.
A breaker that holds for ten, twenty, or forty minutes and then trips points at a heat or load problem instead: a dirty coil, a failing capacitor, low airflow, or a motor drawing progressively more current as it heats up. Those are usually the cheaper repairs.
Amperage draw rises with condensing temperature, so a system that's marginal in May trips reliably in August. A condenser coil coated with cottonwood and dust in 105° weather can push a healthy compressor's draw right up to the breaker's limit.
Breakers themselves also weaken with repeated thermal cycling. On homes where the AC circuit has tripped a few dozen times over the years, the breaker sometimes turns out to be the failed part — but we prove that by measuring, not by guessing, because swapping a breaker to silence a real fault is dangerous.
Amperage draw rises with outdoor temperature. A dirty condenser coil or a weakening capacitor can stay under the limit at 85° and exceed it at 105°. It's a real fault — the heat is just what exposes it.
Only if the breaker itself is proven to be the failure, and that takes measurement. Fitting a larger breaker to stop the tripping is dangerous: the wiring is sized for the original rating and will overheat before the new breaker ever opens.
No. Once is reasonable to confirm it wasn't a one-off surge. Beyond that you're forcing current through a known fault, which overheats conductors in walls and attics. Leave it off and call us.
A capacitor or contactor is at the low end, damaged wiring in the middle, and a shorted compressor at the high end — usually the point where replacement enters the conversation. You get the exact price after the diagnostic, before any work.
Indirectly, yes. A choked filter restricts airflow, the blower works harder, current climbs, and on a marginal circuit that's enough to trip. It's also the cheapest thing to rule out first.
